Types of Pearls for Making Pearl Jewelry

There are basically two categories of pearls: saltwater and freshwater.

Today, most of the available supply of pearls for bead jewelry making comes from the farming or cultivation of pearls in freshwater. Hence the term freshwater pearls.

Because they are cultivated or farmed, freshwater pearls are relatively inexpensive for jewelry making.
