Selling My Handcrafted Jewelry

by Lisa
(Newburgh, NY)

This is a question asked by lots of jewelry makers: I am thinking of selling my handcrafted jewelry, do I need a license to sell my jewelry?

Lisa asked this question...

Do I need to have a license to sell my jewelry online (as in through blogs or Facebook) or by word of mouth?

I am located in Newburgh, NY and want to sell my jewelry. Every website that I look at (consult) tells me something different.

Lisa, the answer is maybe. Why not a definite yes or no?

Each state, county and city in the USA has its own requirements.

Luckily they make it somewhat easy to find out!

I put together a page on how to start a jewelry business where you can find out about licenses and other permits. In this section of the page, you will find a link to a page maintained by the IRS on State Links.

Simply click on the link for your state, New York, and you will be redirected to the state's page where you will see several links for information on how to do business in that state.

The information will tell you whether on not you will need a business, or other, license to do business in that jurisdiction.

On the How to Start a Jewelry Business page on you will also discover a whole lot more about starting a home based jewelry business.

You will find that whether or not you need a business license or permit is not a question of where you sell your jewelry, but of the act of selling jewelry.

Note to Visitors: This information is valid for the USA.

I wish you much success in selling your handcrafted jewelry!
